The origins of Scotia Amateur Swimming Club can be traced back to 1966 when a group of local sports enthusiasts formed the Bishopbriggs Sports Club. A meeting of interested parties was convened in the Memorial Hall and they decided to form a club incorporating several sporting and leisure activities. Thus Bishopbriggs Sports Club was formed as a multi sports club.
Football, Cycling, Table Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Netball, Running and Swimming sections were organised and set up headquarters in local Church halls, schools – and Springburn Baths
Origin of the name
The Sports Club became very popular and other sections, including Judo were formed. New members joined from adjoining areas, and in 1967, the multi sports club changed its name to SCOTIA SPORTS CLUB. There was a general lack of sporting and leisure facilities in the Burgh and the various sections used facilities out with the Burgh.
The same year, a pressure group was formed to encourage the Burgh of Bishopbriggs Town Council to set up a working party with a view to raising funds to create new and better sports facilities for local residents. A few years later on 27th October 1971, Sir William Collins laid the foundation stone of the Sports Centre in Balmuildy Road at a ceremony to mark the occasion. Less than 2 years later on the 12th July 1973, Princess Anne officially opened the Bishopbriggs Sports Centre.
Over the next decade, some of the sports sections which had been affiliated to Scotia Sports were more or less disbanded; however, Swimming, Judo and Cycling remained strong and retained their association with Scotia Sports and the Sports Centre. In 1981 the mother club, Scotia Sports Club was dissolved and each of the remaining clubs branched out on their own. SCOTIA AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB as we know it today evolved out of the association of Bishopbriggs Sports Club.
Recent History
Over the past 25 years since the club was established at the Sports Centre, now the LEISUREDROME, it is estimated that some 1,600 local youngsters have been members of the swimming club, either as swimmers or as members of its highly successful swimming development programme.
This demonstrates the clubs involvement in Bishopbriggs and surrounding area and the service it has provided to the local community. The club has formulated a development plan which has allowed it to focus on its objectives and goals for the future.
The club is managed by an Executive Committee, which is elected annually at the AGM. Committee members are elected for a two year term.
